Care for Dementia Patients at Alice House

Linzi Stafford, Specialist Nurse at Alice House Hospice talks about how her role will improve the provision for people living with dementia.

Linzi said, “I came into the post of Specialist Nurse, Dementia in October 2017 - excited by the vision of Alice House Hospice to improve and enhance the provision of services for dementia sufferers and their carers.

“Four months in and I can only say I am just as excited and enthusiastic as I was at the start – Alice House Hospice is taking dementia awareness forward and I feel privileged to be part of this process.”

“It is an area I am passionate about and, from my own experience, I always felt that those with dementia were excluded from many services because of their condition.

“My hope is to be able to bridge those gaps, promote education, provide specialist support and advice services and to encourage recognition that dementia is a life limiting condition.

“Alice House Hospice has so much to offer and to begin with I found myself simply “getting out there” and promoting the fact that we are making changes to fully integrate dementia into the range of specialist services we offer.   Through doing this I have linked up with the fabulous dementia network that is already at work in the area and have been able to contribute and add to the ever growing list of available support locally.

“Future plans for my role are to be able to set up a day service for dementia sufferers and their carers – we are now able to offer activities using the “Magic Table” and this will also be an activity offered at the Hartlepool Dementia Awareness Week 2018.

“Further to this Alice House will be establishing the Namaste Care Program which is a ground breaking approach to enhance the lives of those suffering with advanced dementia.   Respite and end of life care for dementia sufferers is a further service we are keen to establish.

“Four months in and I can only say I am just as excited and enthusiastic as I was at the start – Alice House Hospice is taking dementia awareness forward and I feel privileged to be part of this process.”
