Students and working with universities

"I just wanted to say thank you for making my time at the Hospice an experience that I will never forget. During my time at the Hospice I have learned things that I will continue to use throughout my nursing career and personal life. The nurses I worked with, especially my mentor, are some of the kindest, warmest and most brilliant nurses I have had the pleasure of meeting. I feel honoured to have had this experience and if I am a quarter of the nurse that they are I will feel as though I have made the right decision in nursing.

Student Nurse

The Hospice works closely with Teesside University and their Health and Social Care Department.

We provide placements for nursing students giving them practical experience working in a palliative care environment.  We encourage all of our students to develop key skills that will help support patients and families who are affected by a palliative illness, giving compassionate, dignified care in any environment they may work in in the future.

Student Nurses often give excellent feedback from their experiences here at the Hospice and it is paramount that the Hospice continues to invest in future nurses and will continue to support Teesside University in educating and offering practical experience in an excellent learning environment.

Alice Jordon, Consultant in Palliative Care, allows the Hospice to extend its training to medical professionals.  As a Clinical Supervisor, Alice and the Hospice accept Foundation Doctors who are in the process of their training to become a Registered Doctor, we also provide placements for Registrars who are training to become Palliative Consultants.

The Counselling and Support Team offer voluntary counselling hours for students training to become Counsellors but need to gain practical experience.  Many of our student Counsellors continue to support the Hospice and the families cared for long into the future.

The Hospice is now looking at how it can roll out its education support further and is currently working with the Hartlepool Adult Education Centre to find placements for students who have an interest in the caring profession.  Placements for Health and Social Care students will be available September 2016 where the students will learn the fundamental skills that are required to become a Healthcare Assistant.
