The difference one call made

The power of connecting with someone and sharing experiences should never be underestimated; that connection, whether during a counselling session, or just as a one off, can have lasting effects.

One gentleman who had self-referred for bereavement support at Alice House was contacted by our Counsellor Jo Radcliffe. One call was all he had, at which point he indicated he no longer wanted to self-refer – BUT for all the right reasons.

This is what he had to say…

Dear Jo,

Please accept my appreciation and thanks for your help.

I look back on our phone call last November as a significant event. It marked the beginning of my acceptance of the loss of my dear wife, sister and granddaughter, all passing away within a year.

The hurt remains and is sometimes overwhelming but I am now able to manage and I think, understand my feelings.

Your analogy using the Incredible Hulk, whilst making me laugh for the first time in ages has helped inform my thoughts.

Acceptance of and being reconciled to my loss and grief is, I feel, taking place. As you say, I am living again.

Thank you

The gentleman went on to say, “The image of the Incredible Hulk and its significance reminded me of the picture in Buddhism of the wild elephant rampaging through the jungle. This connection has reacquainted me with meditation and breathing techniques my wife and I used to practice in the early years of our marriage.”
